Musical Mammal I’ve been beatboxing for almost as long as I can remember. I recall listening to beatboxers like Doug E. Fresh, Rahzel, & Kenny Muhammad in elementary/jr. high school in utter amazement at the sounds their mouths were producing. I immediately fell in love. It began as a simple hobby used to cure my adolescent boredom, & slowly blossomed into an outright obsession. I’ve recently been getting a bit more involved in the beatbox community. I was actually a finalist in last year’s US Beatbox Championships (eliminated in the quarter-finals by JFlo). It was a wonderful experience, & I’m hoping to get another shot at it. www.americanbeatboxchampionships.com youtube.com

Ball-Zee (Patrick Hirst) of Huddersfield came out victorious in the Grand Final of the Vauxhall UK Beatbox Championships 2011, which took place on Saturday night (11th June). Crowned winner and national Champion, Ball-Zee then claimed his very own new Vauxhall Corsa SXi worth £14500. At the most competitive final in Vauxhall UK Beatbox history, more than 500 people flocked to watch at Islington’s O2 Academy, as twelve beatboxers from across the country competed for the most prestigious title in beatboxing. After the wildcard battles — four pre-final face-offs — the eight finalists’ performances were met by a hyped up crowd, with contestants showing off technical brilliance alongside skills that had the audience in raptures. The overall final saw Ball-Zee and Reeps One (Harry Yeff) from East London, face-off in one of the greatest ever UK Championship battles, to claim the coveted title of UK’s No.1 beatboxer. The crowd was wowed by unique performances throughout the night but the final round was a truly epic contest. With Reeps One fighting to hold on to his current No.1 title, Ball-Zee proved to have the edge by showcasing his mind-blowing vocal dexterity and finesse.
